Sadly we recently received a report of lead flashing taken from a church in the Christchurch area. The high value of scrap metal is attractive to thieves, and churches can be a major target. Churches often have lead, copper and stainless-steel roof coverings. Other areas such as roof flashings, copper lightning conductors and lead rainwater pipes are also targeted.

In this case over a £1000 of theft and damage resulted. This can be very distressing for the local community and congregation as Churches are often a focal point of local life. If the Church is Listed then this is also a Heritage Crime, (as I discussed in my previous Rural Watch Alert). Churches are often in rural low population areas and might not be overlooked.

How to make your church a tough target

Where practical use gates, fences or even bollards to restrict vehicle access.

Work with Dorset Police Neighbourhood Teams or our Rural Crime Team.

Ask your community to keep an eye out and report any suspicious behaviour. Don't assume that the ‘man with the van’ who says he's repairing the roof is who he says he is!

Deter thieves using security lights and CCTV, and by cutting back any trees or plants that could hide criminal activity.

Take extra care during building works – scaffolding, building equipment and ladders left around the church makes it easier for thieves.

Consider using a forensic security marking system to mark your metal and display the signs as a visual deterrent.

Invest in a roof alarm? Most Church Insurance companies can offer expert advice on all preventative measures.

If you hear of local suspicious sales of lead etc report it immediately.

You may recall a Mid-Dorset Church in 2020 lost over £60k worth of lead in one theft. So please keep your eyes open and don't hesitate to report suspicious behaviour near your local church. Many thanks as always and enjoy the sun!
